Hinton Charterhouse near Bath
This is a substantial house on a relatively small plot. The courtyard behind and to the side of the house were particularly difficult for the client to use for entertaining as it was entirely paved making it seem smaller than it actually was.
To create a softer useable entertaining area, more in keeping with the house style.
We introduced two interlocking circles of Indian sandstone paving and edged with cobbles and a curving path along the side of the house. We constructed a pillared pergola with oak beams with matching archway echoing the pillars at the front of the house.
The result is a much larger looking space with planting softening the hard landscaping and house walls.
The client now enjoys the larger more inviting entertaining space and is delighted.
